Scilly Isles, Sea Kayak Trip, SW England 2024

Trip Information
The Scilly Isles are located off the South West coast of England; a 3 hour ferry ride from Penzance, Cornwall. With beautiful sandy beaches, rocky sections of coast, a plethora of archaeological sites and the renowned Tresco Abbey Gardens you are guaranteed plenty of 'on' and 'off' the water interest. There will also be fantastic bird watching both from land and whilst on the water as the nesting season will be well underway.
Sheltered waters between the five main islands (St Mary's, Bryer, Tresco, St Martin's and St Agnes) give us a range of journey options for flat water kayaking. The sea has been an important means of transport and communication throughout history and still is to this day. The sea would have been the means of transport back in prehistoric times when many of the archaeological sites such as burial chambers would have been constructed. What better way to explore these islands than in a small craft as our ancestors might have done?
We will be based at the campsite on Bryher and aim to start each trip from there. Please feel free to arrange your own accommodation according to your own comfort preferences. Travel between the islands by ferry is possible if you wish to base yourself on another island. Please contact us if you would like more guidance on doing this as you will need to ensure you can meet us each morning.
The exact itinerary will be determined by the weather during the trip, but we will aim to visit the five main islands if possible. The bulk of the day will be spent paddling with plenty of stops to allow you to explore the area on foot, visit cafe's, or relax on the beaches. Ideally you will need to be able to paddle for a total of four hours each day. If you're not quite at this level yet please contact us to see how we can help you prepare.
This trip will be led by Anita Daimond, who has previous experience of kayaking the Scilly Isles and is familiar with much of the prehistoric archaeology of the area. She can also help you to identify and learn about the ecology and wildlife you see. She will support you to extend your interest and knowledge to the extent that suits you as well as being your sea kayak instructor/coach.
Accommodation and Ferry Travel
1. Accommodation fees are not included in the cost. We recommend booking accommodation on the islands well in advance, including in Penzance the night before and after the ferry crossings. We recommend travelling by ferry so you can transport the kayak you will be using.
2. Accommodation for the trip is your choice, we will be camping on Bryher and you are more than welcome to join us.
3. We advise booking your ferry to the islands as soon as possible. Ferries also travel between the islands and may be able to transport you, your kayak and your luggage.
